Tips for Great Cover Letters
One way to make sure your resumé stands out is to have a well written and creative cover letter. Often hiring managers skim over resumés very quickly and if something doesn't catch their eye, it's off to the garbage pile. Here are a few ideas to make your cover letter stand out!
- Focus on yourself -
Compose your cover letter based on the special qualities that make you an ideal candidate.
- Find out who to send to - Find out who the hiring manager is along with the correct spelling and address your letter properly. Try to avoid using generic addresses, such as “To Whom It May Concern” or “Dear Sir or Madam”.
- Keep it simple - Your cover letter should ideally be a half a page in length. Keep it clear, concise and professional.
- Quality makes a difference - Make sure you use high quality, crisp stationery. Match the style of your cover letter to your resumé, sticking with one font and making sure you have enough white space in order in ensure a clean look.
- Get their attention - Don't waste time with needless introductions. Remember you only have a few seconds to impress and convince them you are the person they are looking for.
- Proofread - There is nothing worse than a poorly written cover letter or resumé. Consider hiring a professional writer or editor to proofread your letter or resumé . If you can't afford to hire someone, make sure at least someone else besides yourself proofreads your letter and resumé.
- Follow up - Don't wait for them to call you to set up an interview. After sending your cover letter, follow up with them to set up an
appointment.
