What To Say When You're Fired

  • Being cut loose was a blessing in disguise. Now I have an opportunity to explore jobs that better suit my competencies. The opportunity you have here really peaks my interest, can you tell me more about what you are looking for in this position?
  • My skills and abilities were not the right match for my previous employer's needs, but it looks like they'd be a good fit in your organization. In addition to customer service skills, would my background in sales be useful in this position?
  • Although circumstances caused me to leave my first job, I was very successful in school and got along well with both students and faculty. I believe a company like yours that offers a structured training program will allow me to be more successful.
  • My boss and I agreed that the position was not a good match for either of us, and he was forced to make a change. It was a good learning experience, and I'm ready for a fresh new beginning.
  • A new manager came in and cleaned house in order to make room for his old team. That was his right, but it also helped me to envision better opportunities elsewhere.
  • Some personal problems, which I now have solved, unfortunately disrupted my work life. These problems no longer exist and I'd like to prove myself and exceed expectations in my new job.
  • I wanted my career to move in a different direction, and I suppose that helped set up the conditions that led to my departure. But by contrast, the opportunity you have seems to align with my own motivations and I hope to eventually grow into a position of responsibility.
  • Business is not like it used to be. Many companies are moving operations to areas where labor is cheaper, which is too bad because people familiar with my work say it is superior and fairly priced.
  • My company has been downsizing and after several eliminations, I knew my time was near.
  • I was in a hurry to find work so I could continue to keep up with my obligations and took the wrong job without thinking ahead. I won't make that mistake again.
I feel that I am better suited for a company like yours that can offer me an opportunity for continued growth.
*Remember to always be honest in what you say, and never lie. You need to practice and rehearse what you are going to say, and you should do this with yourself and with others whenever possible.
